Creating new tools for Stockwell Ai's franchise model

Role: Lead Designer | Company: Stockwell Ai | Project Scope: XL

I spearheaded the design of tools for Stockwell’s franchise model, facilitating the transition from fully owned to franchised stores. The new tools allowed franchisees to manage inventory, track sales, and restock their stores using Stockwell’s AI-powered software, creating an easy-to-use, scalable system for business expansion.

Role: Lead Designer | Company: Stockwell | Project Scope: XL

Background

Oakland-based Stockwell AI designed smart vending machines that used advanced AI and computer vision. Shoppers could unlock a store with their phone, select items, and were automatically charged—no lines, no hassle, no checkout. When I joined the team, Stockwell had deployed over 1,000 stores across major U.S. metropolitan areas, all fully owned and managed by the company. To expand its reach, Stockwell wanted to introduce a franchising model, enabling franchisees to stock their own inventory while leveraging Stockwell's proprietary software to run their business.

Objective

Up until this point, Stockwell stores were 100% owned, maintained, and stocked by Stockwell. As a new way to offer Stockwell stores to market, a new business model we were looking to roll out was to allow people to franchise a Stockwell store themselves. So, franchisees could store their own inventory and utilize Stockwell’s proprietary software to manage and order their items, monitor the transactions and sales data of their stores, and enable their own staff to restock the stores properly.

Discovery

Before diving into creating new tools for franchisees, we needed to understand our current model and how it differed from our proposed new franchise model. How would franchisees interact with Stockwell? How would our tools interact with one another? Who are our users, and what are their primary needs?

WIREFRAMES

DESIGNS

With a healthy understanding of our key users and their needs and having fully explored the flows and wireframes, we moved into final high-fidelity designs.

In closing

It is with regret that I report this project did not come to full fruition. While in development with engineering partners on our franchise solution, Stockwell made the difficult decision to close its doors following the first several months of Covid lockdowns in 2020.
